CHEM-AUTH: The team of the School of Chemistry of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki / KEDEK will work on the development and optimization of methods and processes for the selective isolation of cellulose from various types of lignocellulosic biomass (agricultural or forest by-products) and on the controlled production of bacterial cellulose from glycerol (as a by-product of biodiesel production, in collaboration with the Agricultural University of Athens). It will also study the conversion of the original forms of cellulose in cellulose nanostructures as well as their surface modification. Additionally, it will also work on optimizing the preparation of new composite adhesive resins with the various types of (nano)cellulose in order to enhance their miscibility and chemical affinity with the adhesive resins and give the final products the desired properties.

CHIMAR: Will develop the technology for the production of polymers (resins), reinforced with the types of (nano)cellulose developed during the project, which will be used for the manufacture of composite wood products. In addition, CHIMAR will utilize microbial and/or (nano)cellulose as an additive to melamine-formaldehyde oligomer for impregnation of papers intended for coating the surfaces of wood composite products .

Nanotypos: Nanotypos will receive the ready-made impregnated sheets of paper and/or the coated with impregnated paper sheets of composite wood specimens and will treat their surfaces with Thermal Nanolithography, in order to form nano-columns, which will make the surface capable of having a hydrophobic and/or oleophobic, but also antimicrobial characteristics.
